Dawson's creek

Title of Film: Dawson’s creek
Date: 1998
Director of Film: Kevin Williamson
Type of Film: Drama

Summary and Analysis

This drama’s story is about high school students. They have several problems in the school. They solved their problems. I saw two episodes. First one was about PSAT. Dawson got copy of PSAT before the PSAT. He showed copy of PAST to his friends. They discussed about copy of PAST how to deal with. Dawson accidently lost copy of PSAT. He couldn’t find copy of PAST out. They started to suspect each of them. In the end he suspected his best friend. He dropped by his friend. He fought with his friend. In the end they gave PSAT up. The other episode, Joey drew a picture on the wall in the school. However someone messed it up. So her friend, Pacey tried to find someone who messed it up. At last he found the suspect. However the suspect thought that I was not guilty. So the teacher kicked him out the school. On the other hand, Andie told her brother that she cheated her PSAT. She felt guilty conscience. At last she told professor about everything she did. But professor forgave her.

Relation to Case study.

Igor Zakarov in Chapter 9, he was an international student from Russia. He wanted to get good score from his report. However, he didn’t study hard. He didn’t have enough time. While he was think his report over, his friend suggested what he buy another people’s idea. In the end he bought another people’s report. He gave it in to his professor. The professor realized that his report is not his idea; he copied another people’s idea. The professor called him to his office. And the professor asked him that what he tell true. But he lied, so the professor asked him what he writes his report down again. He couldn’t do that. At last he told the professor everything. The Drama and Chapter 9 relate to plagiarism. Igor and they in the Drama want good score for their life. But it is guilt. It is stolen action. They should study hard, if they want to get good score. Two situation show us that plagiarism is bad and guilt.

Reaction to film

We discussed about plagiarism in our life. We download movie and music. I think that it is very bad. But we don’t feel guilt, because almost people do that. So I thought I will not do that, almost people do that though.

Chapter 9 - Activity 4

Words are considered the property of the writer. It is a matter of course, because they make words their self, wherever it is same. My country doesn’t allow plagiarism. This mean is that the writer has right about their words. So I can’t deal with their right. I use footnote, as I have words that mean too long for writing in paragraph or I want to tell where this words mean are from. It make easy to write paragraph. I use quotation marks, as I need words another people’s sentence or idea. Example if I write essay, I use sentence “Boys, be ambitious.” It is quotation. I should quotation mark, because it is not mine. I use a bibliography or list of references, as I get information from books or internet. It is same reason. It is not my knowledge. So I should show you where I take it. If I don’t do that, it is plagiarism.

I think that rules are strict about plagiarism in America. I saw news that someone put mp3 files on internet. He was punished by government and paid a heavy fine. But in Korea, it is generous about plagiarism. So almost people download files and upload files on the internet without sense of guilt. I think that it is not good to everyone. But over and over, they are improving law about plagiarism.

Reaction to Film

We divide into two groups. We discussed about witness. So I thought, everyone feel culture shock, if everyone go to new place. And I thought, if I fast want to adapt to new place such as new country, new group, new meeting, it is very helpful to make a friend into a group. And everyone feel same thing about new culture because we are human.

Relation to Case Study

This movie relate to chapter 12. A detective from America, he went to new culture’s place. So he experienced new culture. And he adapted their culture and understood their culture. They in chapter 12 felt same thing. When they came to America, they experienced new culture. So this movie showed us how to adapt new culture. He had a open mind and Amish woman helped him, so he fast adapted their culture.

Amercian Culture(2)

We divide into two groups. Our group discussed about how to solve Dita’s problem. If she meets an adviser, the adviser says to Dita how to say. So we thought about 3 solutions. At first, she tells her roommate that I don’t like, you bring your boyfriend to our dorm. If her roommate disagree your opinion, you had better be out of dorm. At second, you make a boyfriend, so you can bring your boyfriend to your dorm too. If you do that, her roommate knows that that is uncomfortable. At third, if she doesn’t adapt in American life, she had better get back her country, because her problem is common in America. the other group showed that she talk her roommate about her problem.

American Culture - Compare Dita with Masika

People who live in other country have many problems such as the different culture, the different customs. Dita and Masika had same problems. Dita had several problems. She had a big expectation for American life, when she came in America. But what she adapted American culture was very difficult. She didn’t like American food and also had problem about her roommate what her roommate talked about sexual activity, beside she didn’t understand what her professor spoke her in class and she didn’t make Indonesian friends. Finally she gave up overcoming her crisis. Masika also had similar problems but she had little bit different situation. She lived long time in America and she was married to American and she had a daughter. She made it up that immigrants have three phases to adapt American culture. She thought that she is the comfort zone phase. She felt at peace at ease, comfortable and relieved. But soon she thought that it was her mistake. She had a problem about her classmates. She experienced a lack of social interaction with classmates. They were her problems.

Actually Dita tried to overcome her problems, when she had problems about American food. She found way that she ate fast food. And she studied her major hard but I think that she tried to make improvement for better life. However her effort was not enough to country food. If she doesn’t find her country’s restaurants, she was able to make her country’s food in her dorm. It is important to eat for body. She became be weak. So her mental became be weak too. At second she had to give her professor about her information she didn’t understand class. If her professor knows her situation, she/he may help her. And another problem related to roommates, my opinion is that her roommate may not know about her problem. To talk about sexual activity is common situation in America. Dita just escaped from this situation. She never told her roommate that I don’t want to talk about sexual activity. If she did that, her roommate may not tell her about that. And the best problem was that she didn’t make Indonesian friends. Same country’s people have same problems, so they can share their problems to solve for getting better American life, so she had failure. On the other hand Masika was different. She thought what the problems to me in my class are. She was positive to solve her problems. She met her professor to solve her problems and she found more understanding about American culture and to adapt other culture was never-ending. American also tried to adapt other country’s culture. Compare Dita with Masika, Dita had to need more effect and strong mind to take good American life. Masika’s effort was enough, so she was able to overcome her problems.

Relation to Case Study

This movie related to chapter 10. Indian was ignored by other people in this movie. I don’t know why American ignores Indian, because I ‘m not American. So I don’t understand. So they felt bad in this movie. Chapter 10 Tony and Francine felt same emotion. They were painful. But Indian ignores that people ignore Indian.

Reaction to Film

This movie was funny and sad. I was able to know about Indian and when I watched this movie, I thought my father. I missed my father and mother. And I was able to know about Indian in detail. Unless I watch this movie, I never know about Indian. So I got many information through this movie.
