Reaction to Film

We divide into two groups. We discussed about witness. So I thought, everyone feel culture shock, if everyone go to new place. And I thought, if I fast want to adapt to new place such as new country, new group, new meeting, it is very helpful to make a friend into a group. And everyone feel same thing about new culture because we are human.

They in chapter 12 felt same thing. When they came to America, they experienced new culture. So this movie showed us how to adapt new culture. Amercian Culture(2)

We divide into two groups. Our group discussed about how to solve Dita’s problem. If she meets an adviser, the adviser says to Dita how to say. So we thought about 3 solutions. At first, she tells her roommate that I don’t like, you bring your boyfriend to our dorm. If her roommate disagree your opinion, you had better be out of dorm. At second, you make a boyfriend, so you can bring your boyfriend to your dorm too. If you do that, her roommate knows that that is uncomfortable. At third, if she doesn’t adapt in American life, she had better get back her country, because her problem is common in America. the other group showed that she talk her roommate about her problem.

American Culture - Compare Dita with Masika

People who live in other country have many problems such as the different culture, the different customs. Dita and Masika had same problems. Dita had several problems. She had a big expectation for American life, when she came in America. But what she adapted American culture was very difficult. She didn’t like American food and also had problem about her roommate what her roommate talked about sexual activity, beside she didn’t understand what her professor spoke her in class and she didn’t make Indonesian friends. Finally she gave up overcoming her crisis. Masika also had similar problems but she had little bit different situation. She lived long time in America and she was married to American and she had a daughter. She made it up that immigrants have three phases to adapt American culture. She thought that she is the comfort zone phase. She felt at peace at ease, comfortable and relieved. But soon she thought that it was her mistake. She had a problem about her classmates. She experienced a lack of social interaction with classmates. They were her problems.

Actually Dita tried to overcome her problems, when she had problems about American food. She found way that she ate fast food. And she studied her major hard but I think that she tried to make improvement for better life. However her effort was not enough to country food. If she doesn’t find her country’s restaurants, she was able to make her country’s food in her dorm. It is important to eat for body. She became be weak. So her mental became be weak too. At second she had to give her professor about her information she didn’t understand class. If her professor knows her situation, she/he may help her. And another problem related to roommates, my opinion is that her roommate may not know about her problem. To talk about sexual activity is common situation in America. Dita just escaped from this situation. She never told her roommate that I don’t want to talk about sexual activity. If she did that, her roommate may not tell her about that. And the best problem was that she didn’t make Indonesian friends. Same country’s people have same problems, so they can share their problems to solve for getting better American life, so she had failure. On the other hand Masika was different. She thought what the problems to me in my class are. She was positive to solve her problems. She met her professor to solve her problems and she found more understanding about American culture and to adapt other culture was never-ending. American also tried to adapt other country’s culture. Compare Dita with Masika, Dita had to need more effect and strong mind to take good American life. Masika’s effort was enough, so she was able to overcome her problems.
